Some years ago, during one of such attempts to prepare a list of killies
kept, I asked one breeder of a large number of species (who, by the way,
was active in the AKA) why he has not submitted a list. His answer was
simple and to the point: "I don't want to answer all the letters that
people will write asking for fish". A point that I could well
understand, because he bred many rare killies.

In my opinion, such a list is rather different from the sort of data that
Tom Grady needs in order to assess the relative rarity of a particular
species or population in the hobby. The information that Tom Grady needs
can
be provided without the name of the person submitting it becoming public
information. No species maintenance program will even get off the ground
unless there is an option of anonymity available to potential contributors.
I can see that both Brian and George are right here and I agree that the
option to remain anonymous is an important one. I still maintain that a
user changeable list on the AKA web page would be a valuable source of
information , both for members seeking fish or help, and for Tom.
Including the anonymous breeders in an on-line sortable list will still
show us how many (interneters) are keeping a given species and thus
reflect its rarity in the hobby. Users wishing to remain anonymous can be
given a sequential number so that they can update their entries and so that
Tom Grady can identify them. Perhaps this all too complicated but in
theory it looks, to me, like such a list would be very useful. We already
have an on-line roster which functions similarly. The problem with the
on-line roster is that most people have listed their interests in very
general terms and not by genus and species and collection location code
maintained.
Just some thoughts.
