I have a theory on this matter. Perhaps I am abnormal but the reason I keep
a certain species for an extended period is, I LIKE IT. For whatever reason
,I happen to like any species I maintain for a long period of time. Perhaps
instead of telling folks what species to keep we should place some kind of
"reward" for those species that they are maintaining. Maybe the goal of any
"conservation effort would be the following:
(1) to find out what species are endangered
(2) publish a list of these species
(3) make a concerted effort to make them available
(4) let the aquarist choose what species he/she wants to keep
(5) if a species is not on the list , so be it. There are many species we
have lost that are not necessarily endangered.
(6) reward a person who has kept a certain species , perhaps in the form of
increasing points towards Killie Hobbyist of The Year, for each successive
year this fish is kept.
I have brought this up before and received the simplistic answer that it
would be a bookkeeping mightmare for the KHY chairman. A poor reason not to
do it. So why not appoint a committee to keep these records , tie it in with
Tom Grady(Species Maintainence) and Joel Antkowiak (KHY). We could maybe
kill to birds with one stone.
Just a thought.
