I was waiting for someone to answer your post and since there was none, I'll do so
with the caution that this is a relatively new species to me. I've had A.
chaytori Kamabal SL93/34 for a little over a year now. The male and female are
very differently marked, the male has all the color and the female is the drab
killie brown with black lines/spots. Submissive males may loose most of their
color in the presence of dominant males, but still retain sufficient color to be
readily identified. I raise them in well water which which is moderately hard and
alkaline. I do water changes of about 15% weekly and feed on brine shrimp, black
worms and mosquito larvae in season. Under these conditions, I get mostly males.
I have not played water doctor and don't know if lowering the hardness and pH will
change the sex ratios.
I have spawned them in single pair tanks with floating mops and in natural heavily
planted tanks. The production is lower in the natural planted tank (parents
apparently feeding on fry), but certainly less work. The eggs hatch in 10 - 20
days depending on storage temperatures. Fry will start on NEWLY hatched brine
shrimp or best fed for about 5 days on micro worms and baby brine shrimp. Hope
this helps,
Joe Weber
