Differences in viewpoints

The differences of opinion provided by Mr. Craven and myself show a couple of
significant viewpoints. Mr. Craven is a systems administrator who may be
logged on all day and whose work is primarily in the online world. I dare say
that his viewpoint is quite different than that of someone like myself who may
log in and receive lists once or twice a day and may not have the time to read
and respond for a day or so.

Many of use are either logging in from work, where we use the software
required by our CORPORATE systems administrators, or are subscribers to an
online service with its own email system. Not everyone can install whatever
sophistocated filters and email management software to handle listservs they
wish. The purpose of the digest is to cut down on mailbox clutter. I have
used a number of listservs in both individual message and digest forms, and
have found that in every case the digest is easier to use and handle. True
"listserv" software allows the individual user to select whether to receive
digests or individual messages, while lower level software such as Majordomo
do not.

PS: The best way to stop listserv clutter and bloat is to do away with sig
files longer than two lines. Advertising messages disguised as signatures are
one of the thngs that really need to be changed.
