Hydra
Dear Members:
I've run into a problem that is causing me serious difficulties. I have
always fed Tubifex. I also feed baby brine shrimp at least once a day. I
suddenly noticed a serious out break of Hydra in almost all my tanks which, I
believe, were introduced with the Tubifex. And, of course, the Hydra were
thriving on the shrimp. As you can imagine, this played havoc with breeding
since I usually rely on heavy plant growth to hide fry rather than remove eggs
for hatching. I've tried all the suggested remedies for eliminating Hydra.
All require either stopping feeding live food, or removing the fish and
treating the tank with either a heavy dose of salt or formaldehyde. This, at
best, is not only a pain in the neck, but also does not solve the problem of
preventing reintroduction of Hydra from Tubifex. Therefore, does anyone have
any ideas how the Hydra in Tubifex can be eliminated? I have a feeling this a
problem without a solution, but I would like to get your thoughts. I would
prefer not to discontinue feeding Tubifex.
Thank you,
Fred Sharpell
