Identification

Many years ago I raised killies. Now, after a long hiatus, I wish to again
raise the little critters. I find however that identification is a major
league kind of problem. When I look at publications in various bookstores,
I find that the pictures used for identification are not particularly
helpful: and, in every case, don't have the current nomenclature. Most of
the books I've found are pretty much out-of-date especially when it comes
to killies.

I recently bought three male killies at a pet shop near me. They were
labeled "Killiefishes" and the propriator had no idea what they were. I
thought from my years ago experience that they were A. gardneri. Started
looking around to find some females in "The Business Newsletter" and
discovered the the name had changed to FP. gardneri which was ok.
Understandable in a dynamic world. Then I found that there were many, many
variations of FP. gardneri.

My problem then is to precisly identify what I've got so I can get the
right mates for my boys. Since the current publications that I know of
don't have scientifically correct data how can I find out if I've got a
Mamfense, P-82, Misaje, or whatever? Or doesn't it really matter? I don't
wish to create a hybrid unless the cross is one that occurs naturally or is
common in the hobby.

I guess the question is, is there are a good reliable publication of recent
vintage
which would help a person with identification? Even if the names were not
scientifically current but the pictures were accurate enough to identify
the variation that would help. I can get to the AKA homepage once I get
close and find out what the correct name is I think. But first I gotta get
close. Any recommendations?

Thanks......Dick Larabee.
