Re: KillieTalk Digest V2 #89
Jim,
I've had considerable experience in breeding alot of "Roloffias". Here's how
I go about it. If the species is new to me , I set up a 5 gallon tank with a
dark green spawning mop, a clump of Java moss and a few oak leaves. I then
feed the fish heavily with live foods or frozen. In a few weeks I start
checking the mop. Any eggs I find are removed and placed in an Acriflavine
solution. I check these cups daily and remove any fungused eggs with an
eyedropper. In about three weeks the fry begin to hatch. I remove them to a
drawer with a small clump of Java Moss and a few ramshorn snails. This
"drawer" is actually a set of drawers(plastic) that you would store nuts and
bolts in. By doing it this way I can change the water in the box easily ,if
needed. Most "Roloffia " fry are extremely small and need microworms, but
they will take brine shrimp napuli also. If this drawer is set up in advance
there will also be some infusoria present from the snails and plants.
When the fry are a week or two old , I transfer them to an already setup 5
gallon tank.
When I have about 20 fry I can get lazy and not collect eggs. The fry will
hatch right in the tank with the parents. They won't eat them. Every few
weeks I scoop out some fry and move them to a growing out tank. One
interesting phenom here is that the fry that grow for a while in the parents
tank ,appear to grow faster. Has anyone else noticed this ?
One thing about "Roloffias" is most people don't take the time for them to
reach maturity. Some can take a while to reach maturity. Also the smallness
of the fry
makes it hard to raise them at times. Ergo the permanent type set up. There
is usually infusoria present.
Ted
