About Inbreeding & Culling
Hi everyone!
I haven't written for a while but I have been progressing with my fish
keeping. Many successfull spawns now with most of my limited tank
space taken up with fry and a couple of shoe boxes that have fry
waiting to be moved into growth tanks. (Wish my house grew as fast as
my Killies!)
The contractor was in last week and my fishroom has been wired and
most of the plumbing done. He'll finish up one day this next week.
Then I gotta get the insulation in and we can start building racks.
Anyway, I am wondering what the best approach is to the problem of
inbreeding. I have N. guntheri (my third generation) and A.
splendopleure that are showing deformities that I suspect could be the
results of inbreeding. I suppose the best answer is to find another
breeder with these fish and do a trade. But I also suspect that some
breeders have line crossing techniques that might help keep these
kinds of problems to a minimum.
I'd appreciate any tips or pointers or if someone knows a good link to
a husbandry site on the web I can check out.
Also, I am wondering about humane culling techniques. I don't have the
time to decapitate each little fishy I need to get rid of, which I
read somewhere as being the most humane method. When it's real cold
I'll pitch 'em into a snow bank, I am sure they don't last long there
and I doubt it's particularly distressful to the fish. Lately I have
begun running them through the garbage disposal as this seems to be
close to the "decapitation" method.
Any thoughts from anyone?
