Re: [Killietalk] Tank Divider
Hi Sandy,
I have what I think are the Ideal killi tanks. They are made of 1/8th inch
thick acrylic on the sides and 1/4 inch on the bottom and hold about three
gallons. Basically they are a box that has a hole cut in the top so it has a
1 3/8ths" lip all around the top. On the back side of the top I drill two
1/4 inch holes close to the corner to put in the air line the one on the
other side is for feeding live baby brine shrimp or small worms like
Grindals, white worms or black worms with a rubber ear washing syringe that
you can get from CVS for $ 3.00. The covers I use are glass that has had the
edges ground with a belt sander. Some of the covers have flat marbles glued
to them to use as handles covers. The tanks are light and easy to handle
and as long as the visitors put the covers back on after helping themselves
to eggs, the fish do not get away.
Do you want a photo.
These tanks took some time to construct but they have been well worth the
time and effort just for the amount of fish that have not flown to crispy
critter land or become chipmunk food. The chipmunks are cute and come in
under the garage door because of the gap under it to let the misplaced water
out. I am lucky my garage has 8" of slope towards the door so all of the
water just goes out the door that I spill.(It was fun making the stands
level) Most of the time the water gets on the floor when I put the remote
control to the rainwater collector in my pocket and go back into the house
and forget it is there till I look out the front door and see the water
running down the drive way.
I must say that I have a few killi fish now thanks to Mark Denaro, and Mr.
Ken Combs. So now I have to feed the fish every day and start looking for
eggs again, Who knows if the AKA gets a new BOD that will set up an internet
library of all the articles of JAKA that6 the authors will give them the
rights to, and also make some free educational DVD disks available to
aquarium clubs and or schools to encourage and educate the world to
killifish as the charter suggests in purpose of educating the public I
might even try to rob some food money to pay my dues.

I have in the past used that quilting fabric for dividers and was never
really satisfied with it. It always seemed to be a little on the wobbly side
and I have always been sort of a worry wort about something squeezing from
one side to the other. If you have two similar types of fish divided by this
stuff that could be a disaster. I like glass. No way to get around it once
it is siliconed in place. But what ever you do use , keeping a tight lid on
the whole tank is a must. Remember it is just a short jump from one side to
the other. No big deal for most killies.
