I have never thought it was a big problem. I suppose it's likely to cause a
proliferation of flies if the maggot hatch, and in theory just maybe spread
'something' when the flies come to the cultures to lay their eggs. But I
don't know that those are likely problems.
Simple solution as suggested already, cover the cultures.
I always thought it was fruit flies?
