Re: [Killietalk] Subject: Re: Australe HJ43 vs Gold
Perhaps there might be even more leads/names in these two threads...

http://fins.actwin.com/killietalk/month.200708/msg00183.html
I did SEARCH USING "HJ53", instead of HJ43....I "thought" that's how I got
em and was labeling them, but I could be wrong...either way, we are probably
referring to the same fish....
...and I'm still wondering: just what is the "protocol" for assigning
labels/locations? Is someone "anointed" with this power, or if a label is
assigned by a "commoner" like myself; does doing so make one a potential
shyster?
///and basically there seems to be a real (and even valid) fear/concern
about playing with "marketing" names (vs. the more rigid collection protocol
verbage: i.e. GEMHS and so forth), so lets all bring it out....besides,
there have been a few entertaining threads on AB and other forums of a
similar vein in reference to discus, angelfish, guppies and so forth (it's
almost outta hand in the endlers-guppies arena IMHO)or are killifish
special?

If I remember correctly, the designation for this line of Aphyosemion
australe originated with the AKA Species Maintenance Group that was working
with A. australe. I could not find anything on the AKA website regarding
species maintenance groups except for one for Diapterons. Since I wasn't
involved with the Australe group, maybe some of the participants can confirm
this.

Scott, just respectfully replying & conversating here...things come across
really sterile over plain text, so add a lil "warmth" to this...
"My concern is that when people are possibly creating collection codes or
using old names to impress the new killifish hobbyist, the truth is not in
them. I would be very careful around those individuals. I would have a death
grip on my wallet, for fear of? getting my pocket picked and put as much
distance between them and myself as possible. ;)"
Here is a true & sorted scenario:
Say you just purchased a wild import of annulatus from a respectable
importer like Toyin...say these same imports have a noticeable coloring,
vigor and robustness that is markedly different from the current aquarium
strain...so do you:
A) Follow you doctrine above and leave the labeling to some anointed "killie
collection master pHD types" or
B) make sure the next hobbyist you pass them off to know these are a
different strain...
(you'll find in the KT archives where I asked the community about this exact
scenario, thus per community recommendation; annulatus "CI07" was born)
Thing is here, I get the logic of not going stupid labeling every stain of
killies for promotional purposes, but on the opposite end, lumping all into
"aquarium strain" has some inherent genetic time bombs with it also...
Wadda do?
Scott offered:
"If you have eggs of the golden australe, I wouldn't fool around trying to
buy this HJ strain. Your don't want to be tarred with that person's bogus
strain description."
I dunno, all we can do is label em as we get em...matter of fact, I
questioned the HJ43 thing earlier (it's in the KT archives, ain't hard to
find)...anyway, as the story goes, someone on the east coast apparently went
through hell & high water to make sure that exact & particular strain became
available & widespread in the hobby...not sure dismissing & labeling the
strain as "bogus" gives the strain or story behind and accuracy or justice
(basically there was a reason for segregating that strain of orange from
the "genpop"...
