Re: [Killietalk] Straining BBS with Dust Mask
That b.s. sieve is useful. If you are going to spend $5.95 (plus shipping) for the one sieve, why not drop $12.25 for the set of four. Stacked in the mouth of a wide-mouthed gallon pickle jar, they are very useful for sizing Daphnia or mosquito larvae. They are about useless with brine shrimp.)
The b.s. sieve is identical (except for a different green coloration) to a brine shrimp sieve (and a worm sieve - the same sieve and a plastic box) marketed in the '90s by a German company called Nuova. Perhaps, if consolidation goes on in Germany as elsewhere in the aquarium business world, they were absorbed by the outfit now selling them to BS Direct.
The smallest sieve there may be a little tighter than the current crop of Chinese made bbs nets. A previous generation of those nets were more tightly woven, but still easy to knock off of the jar they were nested upon.
Lastly when a jar of tiny critters is brought in from the Daphnia cultures, the pint carrying jar is dumped in a gallon jar, which is topped off with greenwater (could just as easily be a thin yeast solution as per - guess who - David Ramsey) and left for a couple of hours in the refrigerator. As that water clears, the gallon is gently poured through the sieves. A slight rinse follows the original "stuff" and the four sieves are emptied into four previously filled jars of water. (Diluted with RO water here.)
Remember we mentioned that the sieves aren't quite as tight as the "old" b.s. nets. If there are gallon jars to spare, the rinse water might be left for a couple of days and again run through the small sieve. Just a little something extra for the small fry. ;)
Shipping costs might be prohibitive to Oz. But I might ask around and see if I could get together with others for a larger order. BS direct claims that We Ship EVERYWHERE!
All the best!
Scott
