[Killietalk] Straining BBS with Dust Mask
Just an interesting tidbit FYI.
I used to use coffee filters or a brine shrimp net to separate the bbs from
their hatching water, and found both annoying. Coffee filters split, or took
forever, and bbs nets are (relatively) expensive and often let quite a few
bbs through. Kudos go to a new betta friend of mine Lisa Norris who
introduced me to using dust masks to strain my bbs! I have found them to be
absolutely perfect, not a single nauplii gets through, but the water drains
through very quickly, provided the right brand is used. For anyone in
Australia, the ones commonly carried by Coles in yellow and green packaging,
and the ones found in Bunnings 'Nuisance Dust Masks' both work well. A dust
mask will also sit easily in the mouth of a funnel, or over a drinking
glass. Once strained, the bbs can then easily be rinsed. Or, the entire mask
can be dropped into the fry tank! Lisa raises bettas in 10g tanks, and at
first I was very surprised to see them littered with dust masks :-D
This has very likely been thought of before by someone out there, but was
completely new to me and my fishie circle, so I thought I would pass it on
just in case.
