Re: [Killietalk] Notho incubation periods
My best incubation time for nothos is about 60 days at room temperature (low
to mid 70s) for the species with which I'm successful (and that's not all of
them). My eyes are declining, and eggs are difficult to find in peat moss,
but easy to see in coir (coconut fiber). I use thick freezer bags for
incubation, and the coir does not dry out at room temperature condition.
However, at 78-80 degrees in my incubator, the coir dries out in two months
even in freezer bags. So overall, I'd suggest coir, freezer bags, and room
tempeture which, while slow, won't kill the eggs from hastened development
or dry out.

I have always had difficulties finding annual Killiefish eggs in peat. I
think I would need a dissecting stereo microscope to see more eggs and I
know most of the "tricks of the trade" that others say work for them.
I am afflicted with macular dystrophy which really inhibits my ability to
read small print. However, with the proper lighting and magnification I
can easily pick out the smallest killifish eggs (0.8 mm) in peat. The
secret to me is underneath lighting, shallow water slurry of the peat n a
clear dish and 2X magnification. I can pick out bigger eggs without the
magnification. I see them in my retinal (peripheral) vision. But I cannot
see them if I look at them directly.
