Re: [Killietalk] Aphyosemion Striatum LEC 93/25
Hi Tom,
Having the male killie kill the female is not uncommon. I have kept a couple
of the Striatum species in the past and they were always faily easy to
spawn. If you want to preserve the female I would suggest keeping them apart
until you want them to spawn. In doing so you can condition both fish for a
few days so when you put them together the chances of getting some eggs is
greatly increased. when you put them together use a smaller tank. A two gal
is ideal but a 5 gal will work ok as well. Also add a floating mop or even a
sunken mop will work. Leave them together for a day . No longer than two
days. Then seperate them again. This will preserve your female. After a day
together you should have some eggs in the mop that you can collect. I
incubate my eggs in plain tap water. I think the chlorine in the water helps
keep them from fungusing. No aeration needed. Just check every couple of
days and remove any that have fungused. The eggs should hatch in 14 days or
so.
Hope this info helps,
George

Subject: [Killietalk] Aphyosemion Striatum LEC 93/25
Hello. My name is Tom. This is my first time using this so if I do it
wrong let me know. I recently purchased? Aphyosemion Striatum LEC 93/25. I
got them from Oddball Pets ,formally Oddball Aquatics, in Pittsburgh. I
have had them before or at least another kind of Aphyosemion Striatum.
They were LEC 93/29 not LEC 93/25. Anyways I was unsuccessful breeding
them the last time as my male killed my female and they were my first pair
of killifish ever. I eventually got into breeding Fp. Gardneri Akure. They
were fairly easy as I just vac the tank and let the water sit for a few
weeks and they would hatch. I want to know how to successfully breed them.
I know they are of breeding age because they layed eggs when I got home
but the eggs fungused when I collected them into a jar of water with an
air stone. So what did I do wrong and how do I fix it so I can start
breeding them. Right now I have switched them to flake food I know most
people will not like that but hey I been busy wit
h college. I am going to be switching to frozen food and live food. As
soon as I can figure out how to grow my own live food and what I should
use. So anybody who could walk me through step by step on what I need to
do to get them laying eggs again I would appreciate it. I think the switch
from flake food is probably the culprit but it seems to have given them
time to heal up and not tear up each others fins. So I am happy they are
not all beat up right now. I really want to be able to breed these fish.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.
