Re: [Killietalk] Virtual Events, Proxy bidding in late March
I believe that if the viewing were done on Aquabid that it could be doable. This will let people see the fish before they go on auction and when the actuall bidding on the floor gets going they would start from where the aquabid bid dings has left off. Just my $0.02 worth.

I don't see anyway virtual auctioning by paypal or otherwise could possibly work.? The AKA auctions are so fast paced it is easy to not keep up when you are there in person.? I can't imagine how someone trying to monitor bidding on a computer could keep up with the auction pace.? Novel concept, completely impractical in reality.
Russ, who will be there in person

Matt had a real concern that the workload on the locals would be
prohibitive, NTM the delay and lag really misses the "feel" of a fast moving
auction...and again, undeveloped ideas are full of holes...I'd just assume
point out solutions to each hurdle till the original idea is
impractical...rather than dismiss the idea by simply pointing out a few...
The question is: Does live videocam or conferencing translate into dollars?
That's a 2pt question: Participation and wrestling the dollars from the
participants
1st part is will it increase participation? Intuitively that answer would be
yes, esp. if the exposure and promotion for the service was intelligently
done in a cost effective manner:
A auction for convention "virtual" seats via Aquabid "could" be one way
(start at one buck and see what gives)...you are basically paying for a
local hostesses time...your "virtual host" could indeed sit there with a
laptop and be connected via IM or skipe or "whatever" to multiple partners
("multiple partners", that sounds funny ha ha)...if one local could
"service" 3-4 people it "might" be worth it...or this could just as likely
be a dumb idea...I dunno...at least it would expose the event on a more
international arena
As for speaking events: I don't see a big issue with a webcam feed here,
even with lag...same deal, connect on demand...ties up one person who
probably would be there anyway
How does this get more dollars? Seats could be proxy bidding = $20, speaking
events: $10 per feed...obviously you would offer a refund if connection
fails, but the idea is keep it cheap enough for the buyer to risk
So what is the big risk to do a "lab", what is the cost/benefit? On paper
don't seem like much, but like Matt said: that's on paper... Again, the
thing could be a total failure

oxy bidding in late March
I like Larry's idea of having a camera person roaming a show with a video
camera and putting that on-line. Don has championed the creation of some
wonderful awards and, with Karl D and John M, even the creation of awards
using the digital image of the class winners! There is room there for some
creative web casting, if talent and manpower can be spared for that, while
still running the show as smoothly as possible.
Being a man of many interests, some of the Captain's creative endeavors may
be more appropriate just for his fellow party enthusiasts. I would trust his
discreetness in those matters.
One of the steps to make shows virtual events has been taken by WAKO in that
they have done well in taking proxy bids and bidding on behalf of some of
those who were not able to attend. Don't national auctions often do this now
too?
We had considered proxies some years ago in Chicago but as with advanced
show entry registration, there was an underwhelming response. Still people
would call or e-mail attendees and these folks have frequently kept an eye
out for selected requests.
ONE of the great benefits of keeping killies in northern Illinois or
Southern Wisconsin, is that there is a certain amount of overlap in WAKO and
CKA membership. A significant group of very talented killie keepers and
multi-talented individuals are members of both affiliates.
So Frank Carriglitto, WAKO member, former CKA President, web site reviser
for the CKA and clear thinker on a lot of stuff that I may not be a clear
thinker about, has taken a number of insights from the WAKO experiences and
has established a proxy bidding procedure for the CKA show. I would invite
everyone to check out the proxy guidelines at
http://aka.org/chika/2009_Annual_chicago_killifish_as.htm
And download the flyer while you are at it.
I almost hesitate to mention it, after the lumps we took from
cancellation-crazy Air freight carriers last year, but we are trying again
to bring in a box of killies from the Netherlands. After consideri
ng a very
reasonable cost for the killies, the increased expense of air shipping (when
"they" deign to let a flight go) and the burgeoning US F&WL inspection and
import/export license fees, we still hope to get in some very desirable
killies. Bidding is almost going to have to start at about $20.
If one wanders around the CKA site mentioned above, they will also notice
that we feel that we have pulled off a coup in bringing David Ramsey in.
Todd Toerpe and Gene Sladek, with David's gracious cooperation, have even
figured a work-around for the notorious crowding we've experienced
previously at these seminars. This year we can guarantee everyone a
comfortable seat and space to enjoy what is being presented.
Frank has also badgered us into mentioning some of the "locally" raised
killies that should be available for the Sunday auction. There is a
wonderful group of killies by themselves and the list is certainly not
complete. (Ah! Killie lust!)
One can win a proxy bid or three and ship them home (with heat packs) for
less than one can attend a show. This may benefit sellers and the host
clubs. I hope it will not cost us the company of any of the neat people who
attend their regional shows.
And I know that it may keep (ahem) frugal bidders like me from stealing
something late in the auction. If that gives those killies a home where they
are even more treasured, so much the better. :)
All the best!
Scott
Hi Ken;
Great idea ! And they've been saying you aren't very creative
anymore (or less). LOL This would solve the problem a lot have in
this day of less than glorious economy. in addition to the disabled
or elderly, for a lot of people theres a definite shortage disposable
income, particularly for the frills, like hobbies and this would let
them participate. And could help the sponsoring club with potential
shortfalls because of low attendance.
The technology is out there and it could be done for, hopefully,
minimal cost. We could even have Captain Morgan walk around with a
web cam on his he
ad and we could participate in the Captains crew
functions... I understand hes going multimedia this year at
Michiana. That should be something to see and hear.. With all of the
wireless networking innovations out there its definitely
doable.. Maybe the BOT should add a Technical Guru to the advisors
group to work on using this technology.
Great One, Ken.
