Re: [Killietalk] Green water production facility....
It's a long while since I posted on here, but Green water is easy if you
just follow the steps.
1) Get some sort of bottle, plastic drink bottle etc, rinse it in hot water.
2) Get some garden fertiliser, anything multipurpose should be fine. If hard
up even some good leafy soil will do. You can use aquatic plant fertiliser
and save the step i guess but it is basically the same stuff.
3) Put a few teaspoons of the fertiliser in the bottle and fill with hot
water. Cover it somehow and let it sit for a few days. It should go a sort
of light brownish colour. That will now be the nutrient for the actual
cultures. Way too strong for direct use.
4) Get another bottle like above. Use some boiled water and fill the bottle,
That just kills anything you don't want without going overboard. Then add
enough of your nutrient medium to make the water a very light tea colour.
Leave it open and put near a nice sunny window somewhere. Within a week or
two it will be a nice green. (depending on how close to the Arctic you guys
are). Once it starts to go green cover the top with cotton wool or gauze to
keep anything else out but still let it respire.
Once you get to that point it is easy to keep almost pure cultures going. In
this case of Euglena spp. Which is what you want. As green water is not
green water. If you hold it up to the light even with the naked eye you
should see the dust size particles actually moving about. A magnifying glass
will make it obvious.
Also if you wait till the culture reaches it's peak "greenness" ie
intensity, you can just add it straight to fry tanks as at that point
phosphates etc have been converted to green swimmy things ;)
I posted pics etc years ago on the old killies.com site. I should have them
somewhere still so if anyone wants them let me know and I will see what i
can do.
Oh as another point. Keep your cultures clear of aquarium water pond water
etc. There are some things you don't want to be culturing in there. Hydra
come to mind straight off.
Good luck,
Scott
Singapore.
PS. Apologies for anyone I just put out of business or future business.

KC,
Sorry I am having a hard time with the $14 I paid Karma Farms and a quick
check of my finances does not show a spare $1000 LOL. Is the secret
ingredient Goldie poop?
I think I might try to go the copy route as there is no patent infringement
and it seems to be the cheaper way <Smile>
What I wanted from Karma Farms was a starter culture to start my own "Green
Water" factory.
Thanks,
Durward
