Re: [Killietalk] DIY multi-tank and sump
Gary,
I did like 32ea 10's on a sump at that sub-artic house I lived in...
...I heated my tanks using 4ea 250 stealth heaters on a Ranco controller; if
you need it we can deal unless David still wants it...
I re-cirulated the water using a Quiet one 4000 HH, the return was done with
3/4 PVC & Jehmco's KV-1 valves spaced accordingly
The outflow was drained by 3" PVC and eventually spilled over
bio-balls...change water was accomplished by constantly feeding the sump
with RO waste, a simple overflow went to the drain
Disease outbreaks were rare but devastating (happened twice I think), as
soon as something got sick, I would go to Killifish of West Africa's website
and lookup all related fish for that "group" (elegans, or whatever)...sure
enough, the entire "group" would get sick, usually the weak and females,
et...seems disease kinda followed "relation", amongst aphys at least, the
simpsonicthys were similar, whereas as I recall the austrolebias,
fundulopanchax and nothos never seemed to get sick...
Good luck.... see if this URL will let you view it:

Subject: [Killietalk] DIY multi-tank and sump
Hey Gang,
I'm going to build my own multi-tank and sump and would like
to hear from others who have built one. My main reason for doing this is
because my fishroom got way to cold this winter and fish(nothos and SA's)
just didn't give me the egg production I was looking for. Would like to see
one large heater heat the system to around 76F. I would try to heat the room
but I also have cool water fish so that option is void. I understand that
disease may run through the system but I've never run into problems with
disease so I'm not to woried, if it does become a concern that I will try
another option. So when building a sump is there one filter media or a
number of them? And does it need to be built a certain way? Is there a
calculation for the size of the sump to the number of tanks(gallons) on the
system?Sorry for all the questions but this is totally new to me!
Gary
