Lately I have been using a media developed by Dart frog guys.   I get it from Chicago Dart frog.   The media once mature smells of peanut butter and beer.    Seems to be working very well.   MASSIVE numbers of fat flies. Thousands per culture.  

I have also been using the excelsior media essentially stringy wood.   This greatly improves numbers as it gives more space for the flies to sit and for the larvae to pupate.  PLUS coffee filters.   

I have been using the 32oz. Deli cups.  That are ventilated with some type of paper.  The cups are disposable though a quick bleach bath and rinse allows you to re-use them several times over.

ALSO do not forget to lay out small dishes of beer around the killie tanks to capture fruit flies where they will sufficiently DROWN.   Or just leave a couple of empty beer cans sitting around NOT TO TOUGH for most killikeepers.  HA HA
