Hi Brian,
I have been using fruit flies as a  main food for my killies for years now. 
I agree that a good media is important for success. My fish room is about 72 
deg. F. so I keep my fruit fly cultures on a top shelf where it is a little 
warmer. Cultures develop a little slower in the winter but still do fine. 
Much quicker in the summer when temps are warmer. My cultures will produce a 
good supply of flies for over a month.
