To Scott and Karl,
In the event other AKA members are interested in the worm chopper
you can call customer services at 1-800-545-4411 and ask for the name of
stores in your area that carry it. The name used by General Housewares
Corp., is,Rolling Herb Mincer. It is under a Oxo heading. This is the most
sturdy device that I have seen and will last a lifetime. The company is
located in Terre Houte,Indiana
I have written about this device, for KIllie Talk,in the past, as
well as a series of know how to breed books, about 40 years ago. I also
included a drawing of the tool. One AKA member wrote that she purchased a
mincer and the results were a mess. I'm sorry that I never followed up on it
to add some proper instructions. Evidently she did not rinse the worms and
the resulting blood caused the water to become cloudy. Once you decide
what size you want to reach ,on the cutting board, you then place the entire
contents into a bucket of water. Then pour through a cloth or net so that
blood can be removed from the diced worms. I have a large brine shrimp net
that I use. You need to rinse until water flows through cleanly. It was
purchased from the Florida Fish farmers catolog. Sorry I don't have the
number ,any longer. You can also use the mincer to dice shrimp and large
dehydrated krill. The krill should be hydrated prior to cutting. The latter
two foods,when placed on th!
e cutting board, should be flooded, with water, this is for lubrication and
ease of cutting. They should be placed in a bucket of water and then poured
into a 1 mm net. You can then force the smaller pieces through the net by a
stream of water. This will give you a seperation of sizes that can then be
fed to different sizes of fish. It is a tool that no fish room should be
without.
For those of you that culture daphnia you can save some of the bloody
water, from the rinse net,and added to your daphnia culture ,as a food. You
need to be very careful on the amount added as your culture can crash.
Aeration should always be applied.
Rosario
