I made a pond filter using a kitty litter pan, a sump pump and gravel . I put the sump pump in the middle of the litter box and then filled around it with the gravel. I ran the outflow of the pump to a waterfall. You could put a piece of foam down first and cut a hole just large enough for the sump pump to fit it first to clean the water finer.
