Re: [Killietalk] Killietalk Digest, Vol 62, Maylayan Snails as fish egg eating pests/breeding dwarf Corydoras
I use a permanent breeding set up to raise the dwarf Corydoras, C.
habrosus and C. hastatus.
These tanks have numerous Malayan Trumpet Snails(MTS) and extremely high
populations on Cherry Shrimp and neither animal causes any losses of
viable Corydoras eggs. Corydoras eggs are comparable to many killiefish
eggs in both size and toughness although their incubation periods are
normally about 5 days.
The breeding tanks have less than 1/4 inch of FloraBase substrate,
Anubias growing on wood and a surface layer of Tropical
Hornwort(Ceratophyllum submersum). I also provide a sizable rubble pile
of hollow ceramic bio-media to provide numerous hiding places for
catfish larvae. Two sponge filters similar to HydroSponge IV are used,
one has a MaxiJet 600 power head on it.
I begin with a dozen breeding sized Corydoras and regularly harvest 25
to 50 young Corys yet the population remains stable at about 100 of
various sizes not counting the hiding larvae.
I only note tht the MTS eat fish foods and dead animals. They do not et
eggs laid by the Catfish.
This method of breeding Corydoras only works for the dawarf species.
Normal sized Corydoras such as C. sterbai will usually eat their own
eggs if left with them so the MTS as egg predators is irrelevant but
these snails are often present in my larger Corydoras breeding set ups
which are similar; the main difference is that I remove the breeders
after they have completed spawning.
Perhaps MTS can eat some fish eggs, I know I would not allow them to be
present in a Tetra breeding tank until after the eggs have hatched but
they do not seem to be likely to eat most viable klliefish eggs to me. I
would suspect other causes f eat disappearance such as dead or infertile
egg decomposition before blaming MTS. However, just because I tolerate
them in some tanks, they can become so numerous in certain conditions as
to be annoying to me. I have treated tanks with flubendazole and it did
not harm the snails but I was treating to eliminate Hydra not snails so
the dosage I used was not extraordinarily high. Here is a photo of a
Corydoras hastatus breeding tank set up.
