Re: [Killietalk] Daphnia Net

Another possibility, if (like me) you aren't has handy as Al, or don't wish to spend the money on the increasingly diverse net line from Jonah's (thanks Lee), one might stumble across a solid 8" x 12" fine mesh net on a solid 14" wooden handle in the pond section of Menard's. I happened by last fall and bought it for $5 at the end of the season. They even attached an eyelet in the end of the handle, so it can be conveniently hung up and dried outside.

Wish they had had the telescoping handle and greater variety of meshes when I got my "perfect dip net." It has worked very well (considering the operator). Our enthusiasm for collecting locally though has been considerable dampened by the spread of Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia (VHS) in Illinois and the prohibitions of the transport of caught fish not certified as free of that "highly contagious virus."

That is yet another reason, if collecting "wild" Daphnia and other food organisms, to only collect in ponds where fish are absent. And one could still wonder if that is proof against VHS.

All the best!

Off to Sherman Williams...

straining net. This will cost you about $2 bucks. Get a couple incase you
have a friend that like it. They work for me . they are also fine enough to
catch Cyclops which around here this time of year are a lot more abundant.
In Indianapolis go under the KY. St. bridge great for Cyclops and they are
east to get to.

Subject: [Killietalk] Daphnia Net

Hi Guys,
Does anyone have a good source for a net to collect daphnia.
Something at least a foot around or square.. I can adapt it to a
telescoping pole so I could use a short handle net or even just the
net bag which I can mount on an old net hoop.
