Subject: [Killietalk] Simpler methods of harvesting confused flour beetles
Hi Friends,
I never liked fiddling with the flour sifter. It can make a dusty mess.
Today, while watching a boring slow market, I opened a container and pushed
a plastic bottle cap upside down into the flour, so the the edge of the
bottle cap is level with the flour. The beetles crawl over the edge, and
fall into the bottle cap. When I have enough beetles, remove the cap, and
sprinkle in the fish tanks.
I easily collected about 50 beetles in about 30 minutes while doing
something else, and no sifter, and no dust from the sifting process.
Another method is to dangle a piece of yarn over the edge of the container,
and above the surface of the tank. Just make sure that the container has a
round slippery edge that the beetles cant crawl on. This turns out to be an
automatic fish feeder since the beetles fall to the surface, and the fish
devour them.
Another advantage to this technique, is that the larvae remain in the flour.
Cant get much simpler. :)
