Re: [Killietalk] JAKA
I am not sure how anyone can make such harsh remarks in regard to JAKA. I know that I have made some comments in the past, but we should all remember what JAKA was like before Marshall began his work with it. JAKA has evolved into a truly classy hobbyist publication. I rememember when color was out of the question.
I think that we should make sure that we evaluate and edit our thoughts before we hit the send button. I know that while the membership waits for their JAKA's, Marshall Ostrow is waiting on or soliciting for material. I know that the last time that I contributed, he was waiting on me. It is very important for us to know that when someone volunteers to do a service, especially the one that the JAKA editor does, we should realize that this volonteer is doing this because he cares and loves to do this. Let's not make a mistake by making this a bad experience for the editor and the membership. Maybe some of us should have offered to do some leg work for Mr. Ostrow when he needed some help!

Subject: [Killietalk] JAKA
How can anyone complain of volunteer activities in a volunteer organization in a world where fewer and fewer people offer their time for such activities. I think we should all be more than pleased for the fine job that is being done. My fear is that in a few years it might be gone. Watching the AKA function for nearly 40 years has shown me time and again its remarkable gifts to hobbyists.

Mr. May,
I read with great interest your Killietalk post today complaining about some of the perceived inequities of the AKA. I can only provide an answer to your rather harsh accusations concerning JAKA. The rest of your obviously unresearched indictment was quite adequately addressed by our chairman Barry Cooper.
It is absolutely true that the September/October and November/December 2007 issues of JAKA were combined into one larger issue, but that was done for a very specific reason, which, by the way, you did not ask about. I suggest you go back to school to brush up on your basic multiplication, addition, and "divided bys". Six issues of JAKA per year, at 32 pages per issue means that every AKA member receives 192 pages ( 6 x 32) of valuable killifish information each and every year. Now 4 single issues (January/February 2007, March/April 2007, May/June 2007, and July/August 2007) equals 32 pages times 4, which equals 128 pages of valuable killifish information. Add to that the 64 pages of valuable killifish information that appeared in the September/October/November/December 2007 issue of JAKA, and you have exactly 192 pages of valuable killifish information published in JAKA in the year 2007. You see, Erny, 128 + 64 = 192, no matter where you went to school
and no matter in whic!
h country, or, for that matter, on which planet you received your basic education.
Now, you also mentioned the lateness. Well I am not one for making excuses. I really don't believe in them. In my mind there are reasons but no excuses. But it so happens that last fall I had a viral attack of the heart and had to have heart surgery. My doctors wouldn't let me bring my laptop into the hospital to work on JAKA. That was followed by a severe attack of COPD, which made breathing very difficult. Well by December I had overcome all of those problems probably, in part, as a direct result of all of the good wishes and prayers I received from a number of our fellow AKAers. Now, to add a little fat to the fire, my 93-year-old mother became gravely ill in January 2008. She lived here in Memphis, in a nursing home very near my home. My spouse and I were the only one of her children also living in Memphis, so it became my responsibility to manage not only all of her personal affairs but also her physical well-being. Unfortunately, she passed away on
April 7, 2008.
Requi!
ring an average of 15 to 20 hours a week to manage JAKA, with no pay, by the way, and holding down a full-time paying job (thank heavens, only part-time now), plus all of those personal issues, it's really a miracle that we got the Sept-Dec 2007 issue of JAKA published at all, let alone on time.
In all sincerity, Erny, if you think you can do a better job of managing JAKA, you or anybody else is welcome to try. I will gladly step down and give you the reins, and I'll even stand by for a few months to help get you started.
I know you are a killie keeper of long experience. In all those years you've no doubt run the gamut with killies. So how about sharing your wealth of killifish experiences with your fellow hobbyists by writing an article or two for publication in JAKA. Your editorial contributions would be greatly appreciated and would go a long way in helping to keep JAKA published on time.
