Karl is probably right about the mortality of good fish bought at auction, 
but the point of the auction is to raise funds and interest. If some of the 
rare stock is held back and distributed to top breeders, by whatever method 
works for the club, they will likely propagate those fish to give them a 
good start, and everyone wins. The International Anabantoid Association (now 
I think defunct) did this; it provided fish to breeders in exchange for them 
sending a good portion of their progeny back to the club for redistribution 
to the general members who were not yet experienced. - Bob G.
