Re: [Killietalk] Killietalk Digest, Vol 58, ??RE: Simpsonichthys spp

Larry
The boitonei eggs don't like it too warm as I understand it; a good man in
Scandanavia sent me some twice and I'm thinking the warm Ohio
springs/summers ruined the eggs...

The other two species OTOH IME don't like it too cold (my flammeus keeled
over at 60F, YMMV)...as a segway; I dunno what triggers skewed sex ratio's
but whatever it is/was caused a over abundance of males for the s.const, and
the opposite for the flammeus....

...A few sources recommend 6-8 weeks for all 3 species...personally I recall
hatching the s.const & flammeus whenever I thought about it...I'd routinely
go 3mos regardless of temps and can't remember too much issue with sliders
or whatever

Only other thing is: I wouldn't crowd em, you can get large spawns and again
IME, the simps never seem to fully recover. I discovered this by raising
fewer flammeus, which as it turns out is a larger simp. Males are flat out
gorgeous if pampered...

Hi Everyone,

I have raised the following Simpsonichthys spp in the past:

S. boitonei

S. flammeua Nova Roma

S. perpindicularis

I just ordered a pair of S. constanciae which I am confident will not be
problematic but anything in particular you think I should be aware of please
feel free to provide some input.

I ordered 30 eggs of S. magnificus. I know these are a difficult sp with a
much longer incubation period than most others in this genus.

I tried to hatch purchased eggs in the past but had no success.

These are the species that I feel the least confident about.

I have been in AKA off and on since 1968 and have bred and raised over 100
species. So I do have a bit of experience. I have been frustrated in my
efforts to raise many killies in my new fish room located on SE corner of
Washington State where the summer temps are regularly over 110*F for weeks
at a time. I has caused be to give up on killies but I have always liked
Simpsonichthys and they are better suited for my conditions than
Austrofundulus spp are by far. I have a cellar than rarely exceeds 80*F
available for incubating eggs or setting up spawning tanks to get me through
the Summer.

On an unrelated fish subject I am breeding Peckoltia sp L134 aka Leopard
Frog Peckoltia Plecos. It is among the most beautiful of the small fancy
Plecos. They only grow to 3 inches. I have created a waiting list for those
who wish to get F1 juveniles. If anyone is interested, please contact me off
list. I have ~50 fry and some spawns still in caves but there won't ever be
an unlimited supply. It takes me about four months to grow them to 1 inch
which is much faster growth than many plecos like H. zebra.
