Re: [Killietalk] 2 killifish pictures needed...a word of caution
I also wonder about the Misaje. Fp. gardneri Misaje is a gorgeous gardneri, but has the typical red and yellow bands on each of the unpaired fins. The anal fin there looks reminiscent of the gardneri gardneri strains like Nsukka or the one up north, Lafia.
In the 1960s and very early 70s gardneri from Akure were the hobby gardneri, though they traveled under a couple of names. Advice was given to mix the Akure blue morph and the yellow morph (the typical "clauseni" / "nigerianum" forms with the yellow and red bamds in the dorsal, anal and caudal fins). Walked into an area shop about ''74 and found a 20-gallon tank full of gardneri. Their fins and body colors were every combination of those two strains! Soon we realized that each strain was hardy enough that crosses weren't necessary and those fish became gardneri aquarium strain.
I don't have time this morning to look up those gardneri strains in the Aqualog book or in the gallery of a national killie group, but I think that if you do, you will find a different looking gardneri Misaje. You may wish to check around for what Lakoja first came in as too. (The Scheel atlas is good, but the photo editor does not seem to have entirely understood text. There are several times that the same killie photo can be found in two places with different names. One killie image is listed in three different pages with different captions.)
It is easy to mix gardneri. I keep a couple of strains and try to keep them on different racks or racks. 4 to 6 feet of air space usually does the job. However I must have mixed some fry once because as they colored out, there were clearly Nsukka and Misaje in there. Despairing of being able to sort females out, I bagged up the whole bunch and gave them to a shop as feeders. They
asked if someone wanted some for an aquarium what they should call them. I suggested gardneri aquarium strain. They then lost them before they could sell them anyway.
Mary, the photo images are wonderful. But please don't submit that one labeled as Misaje to Badman's. You may also wish to wait on the Lakoja.
All the best!
