Re: [Killietalk] Pond Update (Scott Davis)

The pre-formed fiberglass ponds sold in water garden outlets are featured to
be able to be installed above ground (because of their heavy construction),
even though many prefer to sink them into the ground. So either way they're
still considered as "ponds," although these are a bit larger, but not by much --
most range from about 136 gallons to 240 gallons (with around 188 gallons as
being the average). On the other hand, container gardens (or plastic or wood
tubs) found in these same outlets are no more than 30 or 40 gallons yet still
considered as "ponds" by many people who use them for fish. It should be
remembered though, that the smaller the volume --the greater the potential for
temperature fluctuation at night when temperatures drop, and at mid day if
situated in direct sun (its recommended not to have small ponds receiving much more
than a couple of hours of direct sun at most).
