Re: [Killietalk] Killietalk Digest, Vol 56, USPS shipping

The biggest issue with using heat packs especially as discus are
concerned in shipping here is to properly insure that the heat pack will
work... Heat packs stop working when the O² in the box is used up.
When you seal the box up, drill a small hole thru the cardboard outside
right thru the styro inside. this makes for a place where O² can get
in and the heat packs will continue to work. Believe me when i say
this is really necessary.

I would use Overnight express... I would also use FedEx or UPS for
shipping discus. Im sorry, USPS overnight express sometimes takes 2
days, there's no guarantee on overnight for sure. Pay the extra cost
to insure that fish get there on time. Shipping 8 discus 3.5" in size,
you'll definetely need a good box with an outer cardboard shell.. Use
thick bags 2.5 mil if you have them and double them up. Discus are
notorious for popping thin bags and making them leak. Truthfully i
would triple or quadruple bag discus just for this reason... Most discus
breeders will do this when shipping.

I know talking about shipping discus has nothing to do with killies ,
but shipping is an issue we deal with as killie keepers . Priority
works well for us because of size of fish and the way they ship well.
I am fortunate i guess compared to some of you people in that my post
office is great... no problems, either with priority or express. They
know its fish in those boxes and never give me a hard time. As Fred
Behrman said once, be nice to your post office ppl, buy them coffee,
talk to them, get to know them, it goes a long way in the way in which
they handle your boxes and fish.

Just some ramblings from a man still stuck in the frozen tundra of
Northern NY. Someday soon i hope spring will arrive in my neck of the
world... Hopefully before the convention

See you all in Syracuse in May!!
