Re: [Killietalk] Killietalk Digest, Vol 56, USPS shipping
Any recommendations for shipping eight 3-1/2 Turquoise Discus? I have no option except the USPS. I'll be using a single standard styro fish box. My heat packs are those sold by www.jehmco.com and are 24 hour packs. I was wondering if the heat production can be extended some by allowing less O2 to reach some of them?
Dr. Goldstein raised some good points about express vs priority mail. I am used to using priority mail for smaller fish and size of shipping containers. I have had my doubts before reading Dr. Goldstein's post whether express mail was really worth the extra cost. I am shipping fro E. WA to SLC, Utah not that distance has anything to do with how soon the mails deliver.
Thanks for any advice you may have.

My last air cargo shipment was $800 worth of discus on a direct flight from PHL to TPA. They never arrived, so of course I had to eat the cost and reship (via FedEx) and I've yet to be compensated by the airline. FedEx and UPS both accept live fish shipments, but you must have an account and your packaging must be approved. UPS is only a viable option at certain times of the year. Their trucks are ovens in the summer and freezers in the winter. The USPS will at least refund the cost of postage if a shipment arrives late. That's more than you're likely to get from any of the others. Markmatt kaufman

Now, I have to be a *known shipper*, which seems to be limited entirely to businesses, not casual shippers of fish like myself. Further, its 4-6 weeks to 'certify' as a known shipper, and use their service. It's still $35 unless I ask for pet service, in which case it's $150. Probably not going to ask for pet service. The USPS, of course, will ineptly ship my fish. Last time (November), the fish took a week of express mail to get lost in transit and make their way back to me. At least they refunded the $35 express mail fee, but nothing for the dead fish. So, I'm down on the USPS, but have no alternative, since the UPS and FedEx don't officially ship fish (I suppose I can take my chances with them.)Suggestions? I'm going with the USPS now, and am probably going to ask a friendly pet shop
that might be a known shipper to see if they'll help me out in the future._________________________________________________________________Watch ?Cause Effect,? a show about real people making a real difference. I hate the US governmentTo: "killifish discussion list" <killietalk at aka_org>There are problems with Express Mail, including delays associated with their tracking system that requires a live person to write down
receipt and delivery at every stop, and only guarantees delivery TWO days after you ship, and NOT next day. Stick with Priority Mail, which is efficient, usually takes two days (which you can pack for) and doesn't come with tracking delays and other surprises. And when you're asked if the box contains anything fragile, say no. If they know it's live fish, say it's triple packed and do that in case they want to inspect. Triple is okay. They don't guarantee live delivery, but Express Mail is often a guarantee of dead delivery.----- Original Message ----- From: "Anubias Design" <anubiasdesign at yahoo_com>To: "killifish discussion list" <killietalk at aka_org>Sent: Monday, March 24, 2008 4:01 PMSubject: Re: [Killietalk] known shipper?
