[Killietalk] Other mediums: was walnut shells as a spawning medium
All this may be of no value whatsoever, but:
...a bunch of mops stuffed into a fishbowl work; well for guentheri at least
(this is a modified idea from a discussion on KT years earlier)...seemed
many eggs fungused, but then again, how many fry do you need?
A variant of the above is "combo mops": these absolutely work for
fundulopanchax & "divers"(that's mops with peat or oak leaf hopelessly
imbedded),; personally, I only use this method for big killies with big eggs
and big appetites for eggs...all you do is fill a big jar with peat & water,
then shake mops in it. Confine the mops within a baking dish for spawning,
then pick eggs or store "as-is" (adding a lil more peat)
...soft-fine black sand works (like they use for cactus bowls and "sand
painting")...same principle as above: you find more eggs because the fish
eat less eggs: you start with more, but more are damaged (your tanks are
less "messy", but more work is involved; net gain =zero)
...finely ground "late fall leafs" work, but then again, in this part of the
USA that always = oak, maple and ash...so whether other leaf types are toxic
or whatever: I dunno...besides; I got no clue why half the time they float
or half the time they sink...although I got fry to hatch, I gave up using
them since in principle the same issues with peat apply (IMO, again, there
is really no net gain here)
