I am a senior judge, now retired because of vision problems. I can tell you,
without hesitation, that any healthy pair of killies is show quality. Whether
they win depends on the competition at that show. Even if they don;t win, at
least at the National Convention, the entry has contributed to the hobby and to
the AKA. They have contributed to the hobby by being displayed for old and
new viewers to look at and aadmire. They have contributed to the AKA
financially. The worst strategy of all is to not enter them because you don't know
whether they will win. That is a poor strategy. At worst they will challenge the
winners by being there and will validate the process. Judging killies is not an
exact science. There can't be precise standards for 1000s of different spec
ies. I have won firsts with fish that surprised me and I have not placed with
fish that I expected more from. A lot has to do with survival of the process of
transporting them and dumping them in new water.
