Re: [Killietalk] sex ratios in wachtersi, ansorgii

Keith,

I hope to make the show. Unfortuneately, I have not been to that show since the Ron Coleman days. That is a two hour trip, I think.

The " blue" color shows up early. It's almost a gray blue. The individuals that develop that line will turn kind of a grayish tan color. Those are females. It seems that the young males have a more prominent banding. The orange in the fins is striking at such a small size. In fact, I think that young males, at a year or so , are the most colorful.

  Mark,

I'll look for a larger caudal and blue background. I'm seeing orange on the
anal fins of fish I'm presuming to be males. I don't remember if the
females also have a little color in the fins or not. I don't have the
breeders any more to compare the fry with. Have you noticed a tendency for
females to have a dark line about half a body length long just above and
parallel to the anal fin? Some fish seem to display such a line prominently
while others have it only faintly if at all.

I don't think many people work with Epi's. I did see a couple pair of
Massana at WAKO this fall, so there are at least a few people maintaining
this fish. It is tough to get a hold of whether or not a fish is safely
established in this hobby, isn't it.

You mentioned that you're in Indy. Hope you can make it to Elkart this Feb.
It's a nice show.

Thanks.

Keith

Keith,

I have, what it seems, alot of small female Ep. ansorgei. I have had them
for awhile and have always had more females at about three to one. The
males, when they just start to show color, have a bluish background color.
The males also have a much larger caudal. I have had them between 65 and 75
since 2002 and have never had even batches. Always more females. I don't
really keep track of pH or hardness, but I have started using rainwater
since living in Indy June 07. I experienced a long period of no
productivity until I started the rainwater routine. So, I have not been
able to collect enough to keep the water changes going like I should, but
have been scooping fry. Hopefully, I will be able to bring several young
pairs for the convention.

I got the original eggs from Liz Hutchings after the St. Louis convention.
This batch will be a third generation when spawned. I am curious as to the
number of people working with this fish. It seems that there were not very
many a couple of years ago.

Right now I have several 1/4 - 3/8 of an inch fry as well as newly -
scooped fry from the parent tank. These are one of my favorite fish. I am
pretty much a Meso and Diapteron guy, but Epiplatys, especially these, are
way up there on the list.
