Re: [Killietalk] axelrod update---a minor correction

Hello Bruce, I find your minor error disclosure in the matter of the HRA
article as appears in the "Newark Star Ledger" newspaper completely in accordance
with the circumstances of what had transpired at the time of the Cardinal
Tetra being named. HRA did not name this fish after himself, as you correctly
point out, neither am I familiar with any known case of someone ever naming a
species for him/herself. A glossary contingent with the Rules of the
International Code of Zoological Nomenclature expresses a patronym as "A taxon named
after and honoring a person, generally a noted scientist or collector but not the
author (describer) of the taxon." This infers that such a self description
is not within the confines of the Code.

Moreover, although it is generally construed that a patronym is used to honor
a person deserving of being bestowed such a distinction, this too is not
necessarily so, as you've stated. However, whether or not HRA was either worthy
of this distiction, or whether he did or did not name this fish after himself
is almost a moot point when considering one important fact that was left out of
this publication's article, and one point you may have missed. Dr Leonard
Schultz was in the employ of HRA as his Advisory Editor of TFH magazines. It is
my understanding that HRA fully urged ("convinced") Dr Schultz, in his
position, to specifically name the fish after him (HRA). With best regards, Ray
