Re: [Killietalk] sex

Maybe its complex because the world is complex.

Just because we do not currently understand something doesn't mean that
there is not a rational solution that can be found. Science works through
observation, generation of hypothesis, testing and revision of hypothesis.
As a scientist I have no problem accepting the observations that sex
determination may work in different ways within a species at different
times. If that is the case, why should alligators & turtles work the same?
Just because I don't know the mechanism doesn't mean that there has to be a
supernatural explanation.

As someone who keeps killies, you have seen irrefutable proof of evolution:
the orange Apyosemion australe and the further development of spotless
orange Aphyosemion australe. Evolution simply means "descent with
modification". Scientists are still unravelling the mechanisms by which
evolution works and tracing back the path that evolution has taken. Will we
ever get all the answers? Probably not, but we know alot more than we did
100 years ago, and even more than we did 200 years ago. I have "faith" that
we will know more 100 years from now.

What I find difficult is not being an "evolutionist" but believing that just
because we don't know something, the answer must be superstition. Does your
"Doctorite in denial" still believe that the sun is Apollo's chariot driven
across the sky by fiery steeds.

ps. If you are going to quote someone, it is worthless unless you give the
citation. For all we know, your "Doctorite in Denial" could be a Doctor in
Divinity and not a scientist. It makes a difference.

Maybe it's complex because your an evolutionist ???

Here's a quote that was written by another Ph.D., for whatever it's worth
I find it
interesting and somewhat humorous. I call it a "Doctorite in Denial".

Even tho' in alligators, where 85 produces ALL females, 89 50/50, and 91
ALL males,
and this is "cast-in-stone" by one of the largest farms in FL. There is
STILL an on
going battle amongst the "experts" to debate this. Sound familiar ?

"Hard pressed evolutionists: All this leaves the poor evolutionist in a
difficult situation. Whatever arguments that could be fabricated to support
one mode of sex determination disintegrates when one considers the other
group. Could this whole sex-in-response-to-temperature thing have been
designed by a Creator with a sense of humor? It seems to me this takes far
less faith to accept than some yet-to-be-conceived alleged advantage of
allowing temperature to determine sex one way in crocodilians and the
opposite way in most, but not all turtles. It really is difficult remaining
an evolutionist! I know, for I couldn't do so after looking objectively at
the facts. Can you? Should you? Perhaps most surprising is you can actually
have a personal relationship with the Creator of turtles, alligators and
people."
