[Killietalk] Chloramines

I just read a review of some research that indicates that one of the reasons
for switching from chlorine to chloramine by water treatment facilities may
not be valid. As you may or may not remember, the switch to chloramine was based
on three reasons.
1. Economic, because the chloramine was effective at lower concentrations.
2, Performance, the chloramine persisted longer in water mains providing
disinfective ability through miles of water mains.
3, Environmental safety -- chloramines eliminated the chlorinated byproducts
of chlorine and hydrocarbons which are potential carcinogens,
Now research at the University of Illinois demonstrates that chloramines can
also interact with other chemicals in the water supply and produce
potentially hazardous chlorinated products. The Jury is still out on this. It will be a
while before municipalities react to this, but they may change their strategy
again presenting new challenges to the aquarium hobbyist.
