Re: [Killietalk] K. marmoratus - Collection and Water Testing
Pablo,
Several days in the bottle can make huge changes in the water chemistry.
Things react, pH changes, oxygen is used up, precipitates form, dissolve,
metals adsorb to the collecting bottle and so on.
When we collected water samples for public health testing and brought them
back to the lab, they needed specific preservatives preloaded into the
collection bottles to make the samples legally enforceable.
I don't recall now, decades later, what preservatives we used but you can
find that in the US EPA manual of standard methods.
Conclusion: do your testing immediately at the collecting site.

Subject: [Killietalk] K. marmoratus - Collection and Water Testing
Hello Gang:
Last Saturday I went fishing for Kryptolebias marmoratus and was able to
get two of them. I collected 20oz of water for testing. I had nothing to
test the water on site so I had to wait until today to test it at work.
May the micro-organisms or the organic matter on the water have altered
the water chemistry in the bottle since Saturday? I am documenting my
micro-expedition, may write an article and would like to have the
correct water parameters in there.
On the other hand I've heard about marmoratus collections in Belize and
Florida. What would be the proper way to name my collection if I want to
distribute eggs among other killi-fans? I don't think they change as
much from one site to another as happens with our african killies...
anyway just want to make sure.
Thanks,
Pablo
