Re: [Killietalk] Hatching Notho eggs

Gary,

Multiple species in the same habitat do not hybridize, otherwise they would
not be co-existing as distinct species. In such situations one never sees
hybrids. In the extreme, if they did hybridize we would always find only one
species in any particular habitat. Even when the females of one species look
very similar to those of another syntopic species, and we as collectors have
difficulty telling them apart, they still don't hybridize. The fish know the
difference. I discussed aspects of this in my article "Dispersal of
Nothobranchius - Fact and Fiction" in the May-Aug, 2006 issue of JAKA.

It is possible to hybridize syntopic species in the aquarium because they
are confined to a small unatural environment and have no choice but to mate
with whatever other species is available. But this, apparently, does not
happen in nature.
