Re: [Killietalk] N. patrizii
I sometimes wonder why we cannot find males and females of the same species
in a pond. I suspect it is timing. Obviously, the species would not be there if
there weren't both sexes together, however briefly. Sometimes the males are
produced later and spawn and the females die before the males. Sometimes it
is because the females are good at hiding deep in the vegetation or debris, It
is not always a cinch to sample adequately a given annual pool. In most cases
the females and males are together and abundant, perhaps the week before you
get there. It would be nice to have the luxury of living there and checking the
pools out every few days. Maybe, on further reflection, that would not be a
luxury. The best situation is the one we have in Uruguay where local experts
continually monitor the pools. It is almost as thrilling to hatch some eggs from
a pool that you have sampled as it is to actually collect the fish. If anyone
suspects this is a plug for my good friend Heber Salvia, you are correct.
