Re: [Killietalk] brine shrimp eggs and freshwater hydration
I use round-bottomed laboratory type boiling flasks with very strong
aeration to hatch my brine shrimp eggs. I fill these with brine solution so
that there is very little air space above the solution below the neck and,
because of the round shape of the container and the splashing caused by the
vigorous aeration, I get no eggs sticking to the container at all. I use
three such containers arranged in series with air passing from one to the
other via tubes running through rubber stoppers. I have used this method
since 1971 and it has always worked well for me. This arrangement allows me
to hatch relatively large amounts of eggs in a small volume of brine
solution (about 1 liter). I harvest all the brine shrimp from each container
on a 36 hour cycle and reuse the liquid in each for a few weeks. The flasks
are housed in a specially-made box that has a thermostat controlling a
couple of low wattage appliance type bulbs as the heat source, so I can set
the temperature to whatever works best.
