Re: [Killietalk] Frozen foods

Hi Al - Couldn't resist the invitation! Tubifex are a good food, alive,
but I've found the freeze-dried stuff pretty awful, and probably inclusive
of (as indicated) freeze-dried intestinal bacteria along with them since
they are, as has been said, associated with sewage. Have no knowledge of
frozen tubifex, but that would be pointless when you can get frozen
bloodworms. Bloodworms are insect larvae, which as a group are far more
nutrituous than worms or especially crustacean larvae for various reasons
(mostly fats). Adult brine shrimp are occasionally thawed and refrozen,
but a reputable dealer won't sell that stuff. It should be red, not black,
and I like to order it from an internet dealer in bulk to be sure I'm
getting good stuff. One thing not yet mentioned is frozen copepods
(Cyclopeeze), which is highly nutritious and pretty much everything
accepts it. Don't overlook frozen mysids and various formulations of
krill, which are zooplankton like cyclopeeze, but considerably larger and
consisting of a different type of zooplanker (shrimp like rather than
copepod). I also like live daphniae, but I've also heard they are low in
nutrition. I don't recall seeing any published lab analysis stuff on its
value. The dissing of daphniae probably dates to the old Innes book.
