Re: [Killietalk] Frozen foods
Hi George,
I have to go with Monty's comment on this. The Hikari brand FBW have always been far superior to anything else out there. Plus they are killie bite size.
My GOOD guess is that whatever your source for the FBW allowed the food to completely thaw for several hours+. I have seen this happen, and the pet shops simply throw it back into the freezer flat to make it look fresh.
I do nothing but let mine defrost in a Quart mason Jar, and feed away. Never had a loss as a direct result of the feed. Only as a direct result of the owner overfeeding. ME!!
The Hikari brands are supposedly sterilized and soaked in a microencapsulated vitamin solution. I have gone through about 30 lbs in the last 2 years and have yet to find any contaminant just very clean worms.
I buy all of mine from Drsfostersmith.com. Usually get them on sale for about $7.50/lb. I group order with friends because it does not matter if you order 50# the shipping is still $20. I buy all of my FBS there too, and always hikari
I just find the SFB brand too dirty. Bird feathers stick you name it. Plus the SFB brand FBW are simply huge and better designed for Blue gularis, altums, and discus. BIG WORMS!! The Species Hikari uses is much smaller.
I would not give up on the hikari FBW yet. Go to Petco and buy a couple of mini flat packs and see what the difference is. I do not like the CHAIN stores but they order HUGE amounts and I guarantee it has never been allowed to thaw!!
God Bless, Lee Van Hyfte "the Rivnut" <><
