Re: [Killietalk] Why is frozen (adult) brine shrimp considereda"worthless food"

Hey, perhaps "worthless" is probably a poor choice of words, comparatively
though: Sally's Brine Shrimp vs. Hikari bloodworms, well the products aren't
close IMO; the amount of un-eaten, brownish frozen Brine shrimp husk on the
bottom of my tanks hint at that (I do confess to buying 2 flats of Brine
shrimp my last F&S order, but thats as a change and strictly for cichlids,
SJO and less picky eaters)...

...processed daphnia?...I haven't had anything other than Oscars touch em,
I've even tried mixing them with live daphnia...(but not doubting anyone
else's experience)

Agreed!

For years I've heard this "old wives tale" about frozen brine. I used it for
decades as my primary food and my killies were wonderfully healthy, perhaps
better than now, when black worms are fed most often.

a"worthless food"

In a recent post, some one included frozen brine shrimp in a list of
supposedly
worthless foods... Why? I have raised many fish, including killies like
blue
gularis, and perhaps 12 species of cichlids, on diets that consisted of about
half frozen adult brine shrimp. I agree that dried ant eggs are worthless,
but
why put frozen brine shrimp in the same category? I also find frozen
Artemia
nauplii a valuable supplementary food for fry of some species, and for
adults
of smaller species like Poecilia wingei.

I also ask the same question about frozen Daphnia, though I have much less
experience with it. I admit that I have always been puzzled as to why live
Daphnia is such an obviously great food (I understand it is mostly shell and
water), but I don't understand why the frozen form should be more
"worthless"
than the live animals...
