Re: [Killietalk] Blue Gularis incubation

Khai,
Pardon if I ramble a lil here (just chatting), but w/o proclaiming I'm some
expert (and you can add australe, scheeli, and a few other "Easy" fish to
the list of killies that frustrate me!)...but, a few things have raised my
odds a lil:

- Anymore I'm starting to think all "chemicals" do mostly is keep already
dead eggs from getting fungus (and make it hard for some good eggs to
hatch). Not saying it doesn't help in some cases, just can't swear it is a
universally applied panacea anymore...how many times have we seen fungused
eggs stuck to perfectly good ones?...or find just as many pickled <dead>
eggs inn that chartreuse water?

-I'm a lil suspicious of dirty hands, and even more so of previously dirty
hands washed in soap...I'm more trusting of alcohol based hand cleaners and
an overly paranoid rinsing

- I don't like worm infested mops, be they black or white worms; doesn't
hurt to tie the mop near the air exhaust of the filter either (fish don't
seem to mind the bubbles)

-I've bought a few "WS peat" from AB and it was essentially airless
mud...seems Gularis are one of those killies that incubate better w/air
pockets in the peat (fluffy yet moist) :-)

- also: I know a lot of folks outside Europe and the USA use coir (coconut
fiber)...but oddly, I haven't heard of one USA hobbyist having any luck with
it (nothing I've received in coir has hatched out well)...for the life of
me, people oversees obviously hatch killies in it, but I'm at a loss to
explain it...Are you in the USA? if you are using it, might try Canadian
sphagnum (if you can get it)

...and I've been frustrated with gularis also, but like I said, someone told
me they just need to be mature...was your male 6-7 mo's old?

KC

I have alot of frustration on blue gularis and most likely I probably will
have to abandon this one. They are really nice to have around - eat like
pigs and grow big. Collected hundreds of eggs in the past 7 months but none
hatch.
