Re: [Killietalk] RO units - Counter Top
Marge,
You do not necessarily need a Reverse Osmosis (RO) unit to filter
your tap water. It depends both on what fish you are keeping do
well/better/best in, and what your tap water is like.
If your tap water is hard, and you want to keep softwater fish, you
would likely want to invest in an RO unit to be able to make very soft
water.
For example, my city's water is already very soft. It's General
Hardness (GH) is only about 1 degree of hardness (1dH). It's Alkalinity
(KH) is the same. My TDS meter measures only ~50 ppm. With this tap
water I can keep most soft water fish I think. I can mix in additives
to bring up the GH and KH as needed per tank.
Now, I do have an RO/DI (De-Ionization) unit, but only because I am
experimenting with several aspects of planted tanks, killies and some
very simple hydroponics. Since I am a techie-geek, I bought the RO/DI
unit so I could experiment using pure water vs. my tap's water with
some things.
