Hey Al,
If you wanted them that much, why didn't you outbid me? ;-)
My actual motivation, in addition to restocking my fishroom after a
running disaster, was to get some of those species out here to the
western clubs. I cannot remember the last time I saw a NIG (aka GAR)
P-82 out this way. We have some nice orange AUS, but no Chocs as pretty
as Monty's. We have also been weak in Aplos, and I got a couple of
really pretty panchax species. I have been after F. chrysotus
Melanistic, ever since I brought back a female I caught during
Convention 2000. She lived a lonely but spectacular life as the center
of attraction in my 55G in the living room. I managed to get 2 pairs of
them at WAKO. I'm pretty sure I had the only one out here for several
years. If I can get them to breed, they will be spread around, maybe
even to come back your way.
I love, but have been out of, Lampeyes. In addition to the P. aberrans
pair, I got some eggs of another species. Unfortunately, they don't look
all that hopeful. BTW, the aberrans were the highest bid I won -- $17. I
got lots of nice species that we needed out here for $3-5. It was not an
expensive auction, despite a few very high bids for particular fish. I
got 20 bags for $190, which is an average of $9.50/bag. They included
several class trophy winners, BTW. Most were outstanding quality fish.
[You guys have some top breeders.]
The $300 I spent on fish from box sales, auction and local stores pales
against the $500+ air fare, 260 miles in a gas-hog USV, 4 nights in
motels (3 at Milwaukee, 1 at Inyokern). and meals and such. The night in
Inyokern was because United sent my bag with all the fish to Imperial
instead of Inyokern. The clerk said "well, IMP and IYK look a lot
alike." They got it straightened out and I was finally able to head
home by noon, today.
Instead of me bringing them back there next year, Al, why don't you come
out and just buy them back at West Coast weekend? :-)
Happy but tired,
Wright
