My experience with killies has been that often there color is related to  the 
light conditions that they were raised in.  If I grow out  fry in  my bottom 
containers that have dark, opaque lids, they do not have much  color.  If I 
transfer them to better lit containers with plants, they seem  to color up more. 
 Water conditions and mood also affect fish color.
