Re: [Killietalk] Killietalk Digest, Vol 52, mini-cyst brine shrimps questions
Larry,
I cudda swore I asked about these on-list a few months back....
...and also thought I sent a few samples around to a few folks, did I miss
you?...
...anyway, I bought a can/pound, thinking it would be a way to avoid the
proverbial green water/microworm/vinegar eel thing that seems to be a "must"
with about 40% of the fry I raise, along with the pain in the rear that goes
with raising those live foods...
Here is my unsolicited take on em...
--either they are not "uniform" in size, or some are smaller than 50
microns, or my "50 micro" sieve isn't 50 microns, and either way, they are
still too large for newborn aphyolebias/pterolebias fry and the like...both
of which, unfortunately had to be fed vinegar eels for 3 days to get big
enough to eat mini bbs (and as we all know, vinegar eels are about as
nutritious as "Frankenberries")...Just saying, I'm not 100% certain what
kind of fry would be large enough to eat "mini-bbs" from day one, but too
large for infusoria, et, and too small for GSL BBS, but I don't have any per
se
---and again, I got no nutritional data on them, but one would guess it
would be no different than the run-o-mill larger bbs...I'm guessing the
value add here is in the growth rate of the fry until you can get them to
normal bbs, and the convenience...my take: is the "mini-bbs" shaves off
about 3-4 days vs. using just vinegar eels...(basically, it's a "gap" food
for me)
--I thought that 80% hatch rate mentioned for them was a bit
conservative...now I'm not saying I actually counted the hatched eggs vs.
un-hatched eggs, but just going by the shade of orange for 1/4 tsp per
liter, the "hatch rate" looked "acceptable" for my money
...so if you have really tiny fry and you are trying to avoid raising the
standard small fry table fare: micro-worms, vinegar eels, paramecium, green
water, et...and you're thinking is that "mini-bbs" will circumvent all that
hub-bub, then I can't endorse that...really, IMO it's kinda a 2nd stage food
between paramecium, et and GSL BBS... that is unless you wanna totally
replace or subsitute your 90% hatch "Utah" bbs with them as your only BBS

questions
I tried to find mention of the mini-cysts in the KT Archives, the smaller
brine shrimp sold by Jehmco, but failed to find anything. So, I wanted to
ask of those who have tried them, what they thought about them.
>From what I can tell from the product info and reg brine shrimp the 450
micron nauplii is about the same as that of a Utah nauplii.
I have a four ounce can coming so I'll find out for myself in about a week.
I use commercial 2 liter cones, vigorous aeration, light, reef salt and
about 80F/~37 C temperature. I typically get very good hatches in 20-24
hours.
